The benefit of having a digital Alcatel telephone instead handset of a VoIP only phone system is that you are never totally reliant upon your data network for communication (i.e if your internet is down for any reason, you will still be able to make phone calls and conduct business).
To enable VoIP on your Alcatel phone system you simply need to purchase VoIP software licences. There are 3 different types of Alcatel VoIP licences.
VoIP licences for individual users: This is when you connect users working from home etc. You will need a VoIP licence for every person that will be connecting back to your Alcatel phone system. For example, if you have 3 staff working from home/ remotely, you will need 3 licences.
VoIP trunk licences: These act like virtual VoIP phone lines and are used to link two or more Alcatel phone systems together. For example, if you have 4 VoIP trunk licences between 2 sites it means that you will only be able to make 4 simultaneous VoIP calls between the sites at any given time.
VoIP SIP Trunks: This is where you get rid of phone lines completely and connect to your phone provider across an internet connection (no PSTN or ISDN lines at all!). SIP trunking is not offered by many carriers and is typically only offered for larger companies. The benefit of SIP trunking is the phenomenal call rates and no line rentals!
