Panasonic KX-NT321X IP handset (basic IP user)

Unlike some brands, Panasonic business phone systems need no introduction. They have been an integral part of the Australian communications landscape for years and at one time or another have represented some of the most popular business phone systems sold locally.

Panasonic KX-NT321X IP handset (basic IP user)

The Panasonic KX-NT321X IP phone is the entry level model in the Panasonic NT300 IP series. The next models up are the KX-NT343X, KX-NT366X and the premium KX-NT400X (which is markedly different from the rest). The key difference between the models is the other IP models offer larger displays, additional programmable buttons, backlit displays etc. The Panasonic KX-NT321X IP telephone also comes with two colour options in both black and white.

8 Programmable Buttons - enough for most

The KX-NT321X IP is designed for standard IP users and features 8 programmable buttons. For a large percentage of staff the KX-NT321X IP is a good option. 8 buttons are more than enough as both of the models up from here offer 24 which is overkill for many small business requirements. The 8 programmable buttons on the KX-NT321X IP handset have green/red multicolour LED status indicator lights and can be programed to:

  • Show which staff are free and which are on the phone
  • Work as one-touch speed dials
  • Display which phone lines are in use
  • Activate paging on the system
  • Activate the door release, and more

Small Screen Can Be A Drawback

The one line display is a bit inadequate these days with the array of IP and phone system features on offer and is one of the few drawbacks of the KX-NT321X IP. Most handsets offer at least 2 lines. Larger screens make accessing system speed dials and system features much easier. Also the screen is not backlit unlike the better IP handsets.

No Context Sensitive Keys

There is no feature or contextual keys available with the KX-NT321X IP as it really is just a standard IP phone. Feature keys are typically found below the screen on the other IP phones and present users with the most logical options for what they are doing to make it easier to use. On the KX-NT321X IP handset what you see is what you get. You want to use a function you find the corresponding button.

Other Features and Audio Quality

With the Panasonic KX-NT321X IP phone you also get hands free speakerphone, fixed function buttons that cover everyday features like voicemail access, conference calling, transfer, hold etc as well as a headset jack

The Panasonic KX-NT321X IP handset does however come with wideband audio technology to offer a premium IP user experience and sound quality. This is par for the course with any decent IP offering today and only the cheapest IP phones don't have wideband.

Panasonic IP Phone Benefits

Being an IP phone the KX-NT321 IP handset comes with the typical VoIP benefits:

  • Plug and play to a live Ethernet port.
  • The KX-NT321 automatically self-detects when logged in and brings all the personalised user settings (including extension numbers) with them.
  • Easily connect remote IP users
  • Fantastic for hot desking scenarios
  • The KX-NT321X IP phone has 2 Ethernet ports (both 10/100MB) so you can use just a single Ethernet port in the office for both your office phone and your PC.
  • Easy to move and swap locations without having to go to the patch panel.

If you're specifically after a larger colour screen for IP multimedia applications then the KX-NT400X is the only choice in the entire Panasonic IP series.

Do You Really Need A KX-NT321 IP Phone At All?

Be aware that you don't need IP handsets just to make VoIP phone calls on any of the Panasonic phone system models. Digital handsets are cheaper because they don't require internal network switches yet still look virtually identical. You should really only really consider Panasonic IP handsets for:

  • Remote staff that require a handset and not a Panasonic Soft console (PC IP version)
  • Where you have insufficient structured CAT5 (or better) cabling to have a phone and data point (as IP handsets can run off the one connection with your PC)
  • Where you have a hotdesking situation
  • Where you may have a secondary location that doesn't require a standalone phone system
  • Where you need to access XML applications on the handset

As with all the Panasonic TDA30AL, TDE200, TDE600, NCP500 and NCP1000 office phone system range allow you to mix and match ANY combination of Panasonic IP, Digital, Wireless or Analogue handsets. If you're looking for an equivalent level digital model then you should look at the Panasonic KX-T7667AL digital phone.
