Review of the Alcatel-Lucent Omni PCX for medium business
The Alcatel-Lucent Omni PCX is a feature rich solution for medium-sized companies and offers everything you would expect from a globally renowned brand. Unfortunately, in this medium-sized segment it is simply outclassed by competitor offerings in terms of technology, ease of use and price. The Alcatel does have some positives though, as outlined in the following review.
The Good
With their smart design and ease of operation, Alcatel handsets are the best on the market. The handsets are packed full of options, giving you access to all the essential features as well as letting you customise their interface for ease of use. For large companies with substantial staff/customer directories, the QWERTY keyboard on both the 4029 and 4039 digital handsets are a must-have. Customers rave about this feature and we wonder why other companies don’t copy them. The handsets are also screen driven which means you are not limited by fixed buttons as you are on traditional handsets, making them a breeze to use.
Expansion isn’t an issue on the Alcatel-Lucent Omni PCX either, as it can link to remote workers and other office locations as required. Up to 200 users can be accommodated on the phone system.
The Alcatel Omni PCX is a true hybrid in that it allows you to connect a multitude of different devices in a seamless fashion. This means that digital, analogue, IP, DECT and even cordless phones can be used with the phone system straight out of the box. As far as line connection goes, you can connect IP, PSTN, ISDN 2 and 10/20/30.
The Omni PCX uses the latest CTI (computer telephony interface) technology to talk to Microsoft, ACT, Goldmine and many other popular CRM packages. This means you can dial contact numbers from your PC as well as take advantage of screen popping.
The Not So Good
Yes, the Alcatel handsets are clever, colour-coded and intelligent - but it’s either a love or hate scenario. Some customers simply don’t like the screen driven approach so it’s worth asking for a demo of the handsets before you make any decisions.
The CTI, although handy, is basic at best and can’t compete with the polished offerings from the likes of the Avaya IP 500.
The included call centre application is awful, so if call tracking, measurement and recording is a critical part of your telephony requirements we recommend you stop considering the Alcatel Omni PCX and take a look at our other brands of phone system instead.
The latest VoIP technology is SIP trunking and although the Alcatel system offers this, it is not supported by Alcatel in Australia. This is significant and will only become more so as carriers begin to push this as the most effective and cheapest VoIP call solution available.
The final downside of the Alcatel Omni PCX is the price. As the Alcatel systems get larger they seem to price themselves out of the market. At the small end we love Alcatel for customers – but for medium and corporate applications, we simply can’t see the value.
The Verdict
The Alcatel-Lucent brand is world class but they need to offer a better corporate solution to be a genuine contender in this market. When you compare the Alcatel-Lucent Omni PCX to the Avaya IP 500 for medium and corporate business, it’s a one horse race. Second is daylight! Sorry Alcatel but you need to do better.
