NEC DT730 DESI-less IP Phone Terminal

The NEC DT730 DESI-less VoIP phone is visually different from almost every other phone in the marketplace and even the other NEC DT700 IP series handsets . Most IP phones that have removed programmable buttons have opted for a single large screen like you find on the DT750. This has two split screens. One for programmable buttons and the other for system features.

The way it works is there are 4 buttons on either side of the bottom screen. This gives you 8 programmable buttons in total. You can then scroll across up to 4 screens giving you a total of 32 programmable options. For all intents and purposes it is exactly the same as the DT730 32D it just displays the information differently. Personally we would suggest the DT730 32D as a cheaper better option. If the NEC DT730 DESI-less VoIP phone provided more options on screen (only 32) it might be better for larger companies but it doesn't. Alternatively, other brands with large screens will provide up to 100 customisable features. However it is arguably easier to see all 32 buttons at one time than flicking between screens. If you want an impressive looking handset then buy this. If you want the more functional option then chose the DT730 ITL-32D .

The good news is that next to the 8 programmable button keys there are multicoloured indictor status lights. This way users can clearly see if other satff/phone lines etc are busy or available with different colour LED's. Many IP phones that are screen driven have omitted this very user friendly LED feature so it's good to have. The silly thing is the top screen is tiltable however the bit you probably want to adjust is the bottom screen - this is the section with the staff buttons. With 32 buttons you could argue it is a receptionist console but we think it is more for the CEO or manager that wants to have a better phone. The DT730 DESI less might be good for staff that find the small sections above the programmable buttons on the other models too small to read. With a large screen with only 8 items per screen you get a much larger character display for the staff names and there's no paper labels required. Below the first NEC DT730 DESI-less display screen there are also 4 context keys with make day to day use easier. As the name suggests, the "context" keys will present different options on screen that are the most logical, in light of what you are doing at that time. For example if you are retrieving voicemail you will be presented with options like delete, replay, save etc.

The NEC DT730 ITL-DESI-less VoIP phone also gets the quick navigator jog dial button. This is for faster access to system speed dial, system wide directories, redials and the like. Remember that if you have names of customers or suppliers you contact frequently it is still easier to program them into one of the 32 programmable on screen options for one touch access.

Like all the NEC DT700 IP series handsets the DT730 DESI less IP phone offers excellent sound quality both in the system and the full duplex hands free speaker phone. The audio is wideband G.722 CODEC and delivers a very natural sounding IP user experience. The full duplex is a technology used on Polycom conferencing devices and allows for excellent conference communication hands free. You might notice how large the speaker is under the hand piece. Full duplex stops voices being clipped and sounding funny when multiple people are talking at the same time on a conference call. It means that rather than an expensive conference phone you could simply take the handset to a meeting room and plug and play. The DT730 DESI-less phone comes standard with two 10/100MB LAN ports but you also have the option of a separate Gigabit adaptor. You can add this on later if you move to a GIG Ethernet environment in your office. With two ports it allows you to daisy chain your PC and handset and only uses one Ethernet cable. This is great if you have a limited number of available ports as you can double the office cabling capacity for additional expansion in the future. This is a much cheaper option that running new CAT6 cabling.

The DT730 DESI VoIP phone also allows for plug and play operation. Imagine if a user is moving from one location to another. All they need do is take their handset with them and login. It then presents all their personalised user settings and even their own extension number at the new location. This is a major benefit of IP technology. If you have remote users they can do exactly the same from a completely separate site. The NEC UNIVERGE SV8000 IP Pbx business phone systems are hybrid solutions and this means you mix and match any NEC digital or IP handset. The significance of this is that IP phones are more expensive. If you're looking to keep your deployment costs to a minimum then you should also check out digital equivalents. If your office already has phone and data points cabled to each user then NEC digital phones are a cheaper, often smarter option. Just because you may be going to VoIP does not mean that you must also operate IP handsets too. This is a very common myth and simply doesn't apply to "hybrid" phone systems.

Before you spend the extra money on NEC IP phones you should answer the following:

Are you using XML open interface applications?

  • Is there limited cabling in the office? (I.e., only one port available at a some desks)
  • Do you have staff that hot desk?
  • Is the handset for a remote worker?

If you answered yes to any of the above then an IP handset like the NEC DT730 DESI-less is definitely the right way to go. If only one or two users fit the bill above then perhaps only they should get IP handsets and you can save money, not compromise functionality, with your other staff handsets being digital.

If you are considering phone handsets then you should check out the NEC DT330 Desi Less digital phone . It is physically identical to the NEC DT730 DESI-less IP Phone and the only difference is it doesn't contain a built in 10/100MB network switch. Being physically identical also makes mixing and matching VoIP and Digital phones around the office simple. There is an equivalent looking digital option for all NEC IP phones so there's an option to suite every user and budget. Realistically, most staff you would probably be better suited to the DT730 12D or DT730 24D VoIP phone models.
